Done some more testing today and found 2 things: 1. There is a Glitch where if you buy a used truck, take it to service, config truck then swap all parts like your going to upgrade but then swap back before checkout you will be given new parts back as if replaced and will even get some extra money sometimes 2.
Just bought the game, and at the end of the tutorial it tells me to hire a new driver. Problem is it says I have no slots and I have no idea how to access my garage to add driver slots. I'm stuck in my truck with the tutorial telling me to press enter to hire the driver, but it won't let me.
I can see the benefit of being able to fast travel to a garage, although I've never done so in more than a thousand hours of driving in ETS2, and being able to change trailers in a variety of locations strikes me as a good reason to have garages scattered around the map (and is something I've taken advantage of when looking for hard to find jobs).
When you choose a driver to hire, mind the work evaluation - the higher the better. Another important thing is the salary, which basically means how much the driver wants to earn for every kilometer. The last, but not least, of the factors are the skills of every driver. Long distance is the most important one.

They use third-party apps for Virtual Trucking Company (VTC). But they can't pay anyone in the game, it just doesn't have that functon. In short: when you accept someone into "your company", all they do is add a tag to their name like 'PotatoTruckers' and that's it. The rest is roleplay.
